GIS 101
Bridgit Kirouac, Maine Office of GIS

GIS 101 - Bridgit Kirouac, Maine Office of GIS Outreach and Training Coordinator, will provide a 2.5 hour introductory course on GIS.  This is intended for new or beginning GIS users and will cover topics such as:

·        What is GIS

·        Spatial data

·        Vector vs. raster data

·        Spatial queries

·        Lots of time for on-screen demos and answering your GIS questions

Workshop

Metadata in the Morning
Matthew Bampton, University of Southern Maine

Gretchen Heldmann, Town of Hampden

Part I - Metadata overview - Matthew Bampton, USM Associate Professor of Geography, will provide a fascinating, in-depth look at metadata, focusing on the importance of metadata, different types of metadata, and the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) standard.

Part II - Using the GeoLibrary Board metadata portal - Gretchen Heldmann, GeoLibrary Board member and GIS Coordinator for Hampden, will showcase the new GeoLibrary metadata portal.  This tool, developed in cooperation with USM and funded by the Maine GeoLibrary Board, will allow any entity to register metadata for publication to other users.  In addition, the tool provides a map viewer and the ability to load shapefiles for serving out to other users.

9:00 - 12:00
Concurrent
Workshop

Emerging GIS Technologies
Chris Halsted, Maine Department of Environmental Protection

Michael Smith, Maine Office of GIS

Part I - Using Google Earth as a web presentation tool for geospatial data - Chris Halsted, Maine's Google Earth guru, will show how to create simple but highly effective presentations of spatial data using Google Earth.  He will also demonstrate some of the many Google Earth files he has created for Maine state agencies.

Part II - An overview of open-source GIS tools - Michael Smith, Maine State GIS Manager, will demonstrate some very low-cost (FREE!) GIS tools that are available, including Quantum GIS, MapWindow, GDAL, and MapServer.  Many organizations are turned off by the high cost of commercial GIS software, when in reality with a little investigation they can take advantage of free software, with no licensing restrictions.

Noon - 1:30

Lunch

A lobster, steak or vegetarian lunch is included with your registration fee. You will need your meal ticket to get your meal.

Land Surveying for GIS Professionals

Richard Eaton, RW Eaton Associates

Richard Eaton, PLS, and owner of RW Eaton of Westbrook ME will present a synopsis of land surveying for GIS professionals including:

1) A history of land surveying in Maine

2) A history of land use in Maine

3) Deed descriptions

4) Real estate and boundary law

5) Current practice of land surveying

6) Advances in technology and the future of land surveying and GIS

Acquiring and Using Lidar
Tom Asbeck, Aero-Metric

Tom Asbeck, Flight Operations and Production Manager at Aero-Metric, will cover three aspects of a LiDAR project once the determination has been made that LiDAR is the right technology to use:

1) How do I write an RFP, and what information do I need to provide to potential vendors to insure the LiDAR data set meets my needs at a competitive price?

2) Once I receive the data, how do I QA/QC it to make sure it meets the requirements of my project? What elements of the LiDAR dataset should be checked to make sure I received what I paid for?

3) What other potential applications can this rich dataset be used for?

2:00 - 5:00

Workshop

Web Services Technologies
Bob Bistrais, Maine Office of Information Technology
Tom Marcotte, Maine Dept. of Transportation

Michael Smith, Maine Office of GIS

Dan Walters, US Geological Survey

This workshop will cover several areas to explain what web services are, how to access them, and how to make them  There are four parts to the presentation:

Part I - Introduction to GIS Web Services - Bob Bistrais will explain what they are, what the standards are (WMS, WFS, WCS, WPS, and proprietary services), and how to consume them in ArcGIS, QGIS, MapInfo, and Google Earth

Part II - A Partial Catalog of Web Services - Dan Walters, Maine's USGS liaison, will present an overview of GIS web services that are relevant to MEGUG members, including those by the EROS Data Center (USGS - EDC), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), the Maine Office of GIS (MEGIS), and the Maine GeoLibrary Board.

Part III - Creating web services in ArcGIS with ArcGIS Server - Tom Marcotte, Maine Dept. of Transportation (DOT) GIS Systems Analyst, will demonstrate the web service capabilities of ArcGIS Server, the most popular commercial package for GIS web services and applications, and show some examples from Maine DOT.

Part IV - Creating open web services with MapServer - Michael Smith, Maine State GIS Manager, will demonstrate how to create Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) compliant web services using MapServer, the most popular open-source package for creating GIS web services and applications, and show some examples from work the State of Maine has done with the Maine GeoLibrary Board.
